This is a synopsis of water treatment methods and goals. It is intended to give you a very brief overview of what you should consider when treating the water in your equipment.
Boiler Water Treatment
There are three primary concerns in boiler water treatment:
- Prevention of boiler water carryover into the steam (you need Test Kits)
- Prevention of deposits and/or scale forming in the boiler (you need a Scale Inhibitor)
- Prevention of corrosion in the boiler (you need a Corrosion Inhibitor)
Boiler water carryover can be caused by mechanically induced "priming" which can only be controlled mechanically. It can also be caused by foaming, which is remedied by maintaining proper water chemistry in the boiler using our Test Kits.
Scale and/or deposit formation is caused by over concentration of dissolved solids or gradual collection of corrosion products and other suspended solids. You treat this using a Scale Inhibitor.
Corrosion is caused mainly by having too much dissolved oxygen in the water, or low pH. You control the corrosion in your boiler by treating it with an Oxygen Scavenger and by maintaining proper boiler water chemistry with our Test Kits. Specifically, you want to maintain the proper amount of dissolved solids and insure that there is sufficient alkalinity in the boiler water, by using our Alkalinity Builders, if necessary.
Cooling Water Treatment
There are three primary concerns in cooling water treatment:
- Scale and Deposit Formation (you need a Scale Inhibitor)
- Corrosion (you need a Corrosion Inhibitor)
- Microbiological Growth (you need a Biocide)
Scale and deposit formation in cooling water is generally caused by over concentration of the dissolved solids in the water. You can control this by using a Scale Inhibitor and by maintaining proper water chemistry with our Test Kits.
Corrosion in cooling water is caused either dissolved gases, low pH, microbiological growth, or any combination of these. You can control corrosion by using our Corrosion Inhibitors, and our Biocides.
Microbiological growth can also be the cause of thick layers of slime, algae growth, and different types of fungi. You should use our Biocides to treat these to optimize your equipment efficiency and minimize the cleanups associated with these growths.
Closed System Water Treatment
A closed system generally does not take on any outside make up water like boilers and cooling towers, so scaling is not usually a problem. Corrosion is the main problem with closed loops and for this you should use one of our closed loop Corrosion Inhibitors. Occasionally you might have a biological growth in a closed loop which you can maintain with our Biocides.
